Editors Note
Week in review for period of January 7, 2011 to January 13, 2011.

Crude oil topped $90 per barrel and colder than normal temperatures continued to hit the regions east of the Mississippi over the last 7 day period.  Despite the cold temperatures and rising oil prices, natural gas and electricity prices were able to end flat this week. For this report period, the 12 month average price for natural gas at the well-head rose less than 1% and the 12 month average price for peak power on the PJM fell 1%. Apparently, analysts believe we have enough gas in storage and production to get us through  the peak winter period. Winter weather will continue to drive the energy markets. The 11-14 day forecast predicts colder than normal temperatures will continue in areas east of the Mississippi.

* Heating degree days are calculated by comparing the day’s average temperature to a 65 degree baseline.  If the day’s average temperature is above 65, there are no heating degree days that day.  If the day’s average temperature is less than 65 degrees, subtract the day’s average temperature from 65 to find the number of heating degree days for that day.
