WGL Energy and Chesapeake Bay Foundation Plant Over 1,200 Trees and Shrubs
Goal of annual tree planting event is improved air and water quality

A team of about 40 WGL employees, family members and friends gathered at the Garst Springbook Farm in Frederick County, Maryland on April 25 to help plant over 1,200 native species of trees and shrubs. The plants will absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow, reducing greenhouse gases and creating a buffer to prevent erosion and runoff. Over 10 years, the growing seedlings will sequester close to 28,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. WGL Energy coordinated the effort in conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF).

Five years ago, WGL Energy, the CBF and Sterling Planet began a unique partnership around the CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets from WGL Energy product to develop new projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also helping to improve air and water quality. The tree planting event is supported by contributions made by WGL Energy and Sterling Planet to the Carbon Reduction Fund for each customer’s purchase of CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets, a local carbon offset product matched to a customer’s natural gas usage. All WGL Energy standard natural gas supply contracts for residential and small commercial customers include a baseline match of carbon offsets to natural gas use of 5% and 3.5%, respectively, with the option of selecting a 100% match. Since 2010, close to $700,000 has been contributed to the fund, managed by CBF, and over 13,000 trees have been planted throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

WGL Energy invites you to consider greening your energy supply by choosing electricity sourced from wind power for your home or business, and other options such as carbon offsets matched to your natural gas usage. To find out more about how we can help you reduce your carbon footprint, please call 703.793.7533.
