Natural Gas Is a Clean and Efficient Part of a Smart Energy Future
Providing natural gas service is the foundation of WGL

Providing natural gas service is the foundation of WGL. WGL started as a natural gas company, chartered by Congress in 1848 to light the Capitol. Within a year, the company was lighting Pennsylvania Avenue and the White House. Today Washington Gas, the regulated natural gas utility affiliate of WGL, provides natural gas service to more than 1.1 million customers in the Washington, D.C. metro area. WGL Energy, the retail energy affiliate, offers residential and commercial customers in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania the ability to purchase natural gas along with electricity and green energy products.

Natural gas is a clean and efficient source for heating, cooling and powering our built environment. It is the cleanest burning fossil fuel, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates, with 44 percent fewer carbon dioxide emissions than electricity generated from coal (all types) and 27 percent fewer than home heating and diesel fuel. According to American Gas Association data on energy efficiency and natural gas utilities, nearly 67 million homes use natural gas, and 5.3 million offices, hospitals, hotels and restaurants are heated with natural gas. Improvements in gas use efficiency and appliance technology over the last 40 years have resulted in natural gas furnaces and boilers that can achieve efficiency levels of up to 97 percent.

Natural gas is also one of the foundations of a smart energy future. Natural gas-fueled microgrids – interconnected with modern distributed generation and combined heat and power (CHP) solutions – provide an economically viable generation capability for large government agencies, commercial and industrial facilities, hospitals and college campuses seeking to reduce their energy spend or to increase the reliability of their power supply.

Contact your WGL Energy Account Manager to see how you can make natural gas a clean and efficient part of your organization’s smart energy future.
