Northern Virginia Community College Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Fall Tree Planting
WGL Energy, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and others sponsor fall tree planting event

With the support of WGL Energy Services, Inc. (WGL Energy) and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), the Annandale Campus community of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) planted 50 trees on campus Thursday afternoon, October 22.

The trees were planted in recognition of the College’s 50th Anniversary, following a brief reception and dedication. On hand to assist with the tree planting were members of the Annandale Campus community, administration, faculty, staff and students, along with representatives from WGL Energy.

The tree planting event was organized by NOVA, WGL Energy and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. It was supported by contributions made by WGL Energy and Sterling Planet for each customer’s purchase of Carbon Offsets from WGL Energy. The trees will help to create a greener Earth by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow, and will reduce greenhouse gases.

NOVA is one of the first higher education institutions to utilize Carbon Offsets from WGL Energy to help achieve carbon reduction goals. Using offsets matched to 100% of their natural gas is an effective way to counterbalance the impact of the school's energy usage and complement NOVA's other efforts, which include constructing LEED-certified buildings and offering comprehensive recycling and composting programs. This carbon offset purchase demonstrates to the NOVA community and to other educational institutions that lessening their environmental impact can be simple and have local benefits.
