Baltimore Community Restoration Project Transforms Vacant Lot into New Park
Contributions by WGL Energy to the Carbon Reduction Fund benefit a local community

Last summer, we featured an article on the groundbreaking of a community restoration project in Baltimore, Maryland. On Saturday, June 4, 2016, city officials and project sponsors gathered once again at the site – a once vacant lot that has since been transformed into a beautiful, green space – to mark the grand opening of the new park.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin helped break ground August 7, 2015 on a project that would turn an unsightly vacant lot on Riggs Avenue in the Bridgeview/Greenlawn community of West Baltimore into a pocket park for the neighborhood. The project was the first of a series of such lot renovations around the city and one of seven projects receiving a Growing Green Design Competition award.

In the months that followed, 10,000 square feet of concrete and asphalt were removed from the former apartment building site on Riggs Avenue. Contributions by WGL Energy Services, Inc. (WGL Energy) to the Carbon Reduction Fund were used to purchase 19 2-inch caliber trees, 35 shrubs and 2,700 perennials for this space. WGL Energy’s contributions to the Carbon Reduction Fund were made possible by customers who have chosen CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets by WGL Energy.

The Riggs Avenue project is a partnership of 11 organizations which seized the opportunity to create a neighborhood asset where there was once a vacant, unused lot. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), teamed with the Coppin Heights Community Development Corporation (CHCDC), the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, the Bridgeview/Greenlawn Community Association, Biohabitats, WGL Energy and others to design the renovation.
