October Is National Energy Action Month
Presidential proclamation urges a renewed commitment to reduce carbon emissions, protect our environment and create a cleaner and more resilient world

On September 30, 2016, U.S. President Barack Obama proclaimed October 2016 as National Energy Action Month, urging a renewed commitment to reduce carbon emissions, protect our environment and create a cleaner and more resilient world for future generations.

While his proclamation acknowledged the continuing threat of climate change to our planet and the results that have been achieved thus far (e.g., America’s diminishing reliance on foreign oil, America’s plans to reach 2020 emissions reductions goals and our support of the Paris Agreement on climate), he spoke about ongoing efforts to build on this progress. Increasing the energy efficiency of our buildings, modernizing our energy infrastructure, diversifying our energy portfolio to include sources of zero emissions power and expanding our supply of reliable and efficient energy were all listed in the proclamation as actions that are being taken to increase the sustainability of our country.

The proclamation ended with a call to action, asking U.S. citizens “to recognize this month by working together to achieve greater energy security, a more robust economy, and a healthier environment for our children.”1

One way to answer the president's call to action this month is to increase the energy efficiency of your office. Use this checklist of energy conservation actions from the U.S. Energy Department to reduce energy costs and consumption.

Contact your WGL Energy account manager for additional ways to increase the energy efficiency of your building, diversify your energy portfolio or reduce your carbon footprint.
