Sterling Planet and WGL Energy Team Up with Chesapeake Bay Foundation for Baltimore County Tree Planting
Proceeds from the sale of carbon offsets are used to reduce greenhouse gases and improve water quality.

Our ninth annual tree planting event took place on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Butterbee Farm in Pikesville, Maryland.

Participants included Sterling Planet, WGL Energy Services Inc., (WGL Energy) and Chesapeake Bay Foundation staff and volunteers, along with over 40 students from the University of Maryland and other local colleges.

More than 800 trees were planted to create approximately 2,500 feet of forested stream banks. The project aims to reduce soil erosion and downstream flooding in Jones Falls. The stream runs through Baltimore, flows into the Patapsco River and ultimately into the Chesapeake Bay. In addition, WGL Energy and Sterling Planet are contributing an additional $146,128.10 and $85,564.05, respectively, to the CBF-managed Carbon Reduction Fund.

This tree planting event was held in partnership with The Chesapeake Bay Foundation and is the final phase of an effort aimed at restoring the floodplain along Little Antietam Creek. Last year, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and its volunteers planted over 1,100 trees on 10 acres along Little Antietam Creek in the spring of 2018.

WGL Energy has partnered with The Chesapeake Bay Foundation since 2010 to help plant 29,915 trees throughout the Chesapeake Bay region. Over the course of their lifetime, these trees will absorb an estimated 30,434 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This is equivalent to taking 6,462 cars off the road for one year.

WGL Energy and its clean energy partner, Sterling Planet, jointly invest some proceeds in the Carbon Reduction Fund every time carbon offsets are purchased. The fund is managed by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and goes toward new projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also helping to improve air and water quality in the Chesapeake Bay region.
