Get Your Home Ready for Winter
Tips to stay warm and comfortable in cold weather
At WGL Energy Services (WGL Energy), energy efficiency and safety are two of our priorities. As the weather temperatures drop, homeowners can perform simple tasks around the house to stay safe and comfortable, while continuing to manage energy costs.
One of the easiest ways to prevent energy waste is to ensure your furnace is clean and its air filters are changed on a regular basis. This will help to improve the efficiency of your HVAC system and increase the lifespan of your furnace. Generally, we recommend checking and replacing your filter monthly.
If you live in an area where there’s potential for winter storms, check your emergency supplies in case of a power outage. Think of anything you might need such as bottled water, shelf-stable foods, flashlights, batteries and portable smartphone chargers.
Keep your paths clear of snow and debris with regular shoveling or snow blowing. When needed, sprinkle salt or sand to provide traction. This will help prevent slips and falls on your driveways and walkways. If you plan to be away for a long period, ask a neighbor or hire a service to clear the snow and ice so your paths are safe upon your return.
Lastly, seal any cracks and holes around windows and doors with caulk, weather stripping or door sweeps. A few preventative measures to reduce drafts can help save money on your heating bills.
